Zhi Shi (Citrus Aurantium)
Zhi Shi is known in Europe as bitter orange. The fruit originates in tropical Asia but is also cultivated today in the Mediterranean region. Its fruit, skin, leaves, flowers, seeds and essential oil are all used. In Chinese plant medicine it is the unripe fruit that is used, which is considered to relieve wind and a sense of fullness in the abdomen. The essential oils of bitter orange have a calming effect and help to release cramps and promote sleep.
